64-Slice CT & The New Age For Imaging The Heart

Non-invasive imaging technologies continue to revolutionize every subspecialty of medicine, including Cardiology.  The most important such technology in cardiac diagnostics is the development of the multi-slice cardiac CT.  Our new 64 slice CT scanner can scan the heart in seconds, with unparalleled resolution.  This means that even patients with severe lung disease and congestive heart failure can hold their breath for the short required length of time.

Furthermore, higher number of slices means higher resolution.  Such high resolution allows visualization of the entire coronary tree with extremely high accuracy and detail.  Individual atheromatous plaques can be detected and characterized.  Calcification can be visualized and used as an added variable in disease management.

With our previous EBT scanner, we were able to generate one single number that correlated with a future risk of heart events.  Coronary CTA (CT angiography) is so much more than calcium scores.  It shows the hard plaque, and blockages, and does not require the invasive procedure known as cardiac catherization.  Covenant Medical Center is proud to have acquired this newest CT scanner, and our patients will benefit from this new non-invasive imaging tool, which we believe may help countless patients avoid the invasive procedure--cardiac catheterization.

This non-invasive study is conducted while the patient is fully clothed.  We will also continue to offer high-quality Calcium scoring with our new 64-slice CT scanner.

Marc Levine, M.D., serves as Medical Director for Coronary CTA at Covenant.
