Body Mass Index (BMI)

The body mass index (BMI) formula assesses weight relative to height.  It is an effective screening tool; however, it is not a diagnostic tool.  BMI is gender and age specific for children, but not for adults.

With this formula, weight in kilograms is divided by height in meters squared (kg/m2).  You can also multiply weight in pounds by 703, divide by height in inches, then divide again by height in inches.  A body mass index over the 95th percentile has been used to define obesity, even though variations in body size (or musculature) increase the BMI.

Example:  To find the BMI of a child who is 33.5 inches tall with a weight of 28.0 pounds, find the height of 33.5 inches in the left column and the weight of 28 pounds on the top row. The intersection of these two is the BMI. The BMI for this child is 17.5.
