Kids and The Most Important Meal of the Day: Breakfast
Is your family always in a rush to get out the door to school and work? Because of your limited time in the mornings, do you forget to feed your children (or yourself) breakfast?
Here is proof why breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
- According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat a healthy breakfast attend school more frequently, make fewer visits to their school nurse, meet their daily nutritional needs, keep their weight under control, and have lower blood cholesterol levels.
- According to the State of Minnesota Breakfast Study, students who ate breakfast before going to school had a general increase in math grades and reading scores; increased attention; reduced visits to the school nurse, and improved student behaviors’.
According to the American Dietetic Association, here are some quick and easy breakfast ideas for you and your family.
- Ready-to-eat cereal (not the sugary brands) with fruit and low-fat or skim milk
- Toasted whole-grain bagel with low-fat or non-fat cheese (Eat ½ to receive 2-3 servings)
- Fruit-filled breakfast bar and yogurt
- Toasted whole-grain waffle topped with fruit or yogurt
- Fruit smoothie (fruit, juice, and/or milk/yogurt whirled in a blender)
- Peanut butter on whole-wheat toast
- Any type of fruit: banana, apple, strawberries, peach, etc.
- Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat
