What do the percentiles on the growth charts tell us?  Below is an example to help explain.

 

Example:  What does it mean if a child is in the 40th percentile? 
Answer:  The 40th percentile means that compared to children of the same age and gender, 40% have a lower body mass index (BMI).    

          

A study was done at the Children’s Medical Center in Cincinnati to track individuals’ BMI from childhood to adulthood.  The graph below displays the results found.
