Planning to Eat Smart

Whether it is dashing through the door or off to another meeting, getting something to eat and keeping healthy is often the last thing on your mind.  Sometimes it is just a chore and like most chores, it’s put off until the last moment.

Waiting until the last minute to decide about your eating may cause you to make poor choices, regardless of your intentions.  If you put your health at the bottom of your priority list, the consequences will inevitable catch up with you.

The secret to successful eating on the run is a little planning.  Most people plan what they will do in a day, from meetings to piano lessons, to car oil changes.  Yet for many people if you mention meal planning they groan!  Meal planning doesn’t have to be rigid in structure, but you do need a framework from which to build.

Try the 5 in 5 approach!

  • Think of 5 meals you could prepare (main dish only)
  • You can probably do this in 5 minutes
  • If you stock your pantry and refrigerator with some basic food to add to your planned meals then you have got some great meals that are quick and easy to prepare

Catching 5 minutes to Plan:

It’s easy to grab 5 minutes to plan five meals.  Do it while:

  • Waiting for a meeting to start
  • Waiting in line
  • Waiting for an appointment or
  • Waiting anywhere!

The Quickest 5 in 5

To save more time, try making a master list of any and all meals you would be willing to prepare.  Use the master list to plan the five meals.  It won’t require any thinking, just choosing!
