Purpose/Goal
To facilitate patient safety and promote optimal care by providing participants with comprehensive and evidence based theoretical and technical information related to patients requiring advanced cardiovascular protection, intervention and care.
Target Audience
Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Techs, CV Techs,
Radiologic Technologists, Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialists
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, through lecture and discussion, the targeted audience should be able to:
- Define contrast induced nephropathy and identify patients at risk, including implications for angiographic and other imaging procedures.
- Discuss types of contrast in terms of osmolality.
- Discuss the mechanism of injury secondary to IV contrast.
- Describe treatment strategies, including pharmaceuticals.
- Identify the primary changes in BLS and CPR recommendations.
- Identify the primary changes in ACLS recommendations.
- Apply the new BLS/ACLS changes in practice, incorporating angiographic assessment.
- Verbalize how stages of heart failure guide treatment.
- Identify recent updates to the evidence based guidelines for treating heart failure.
- Discuss recommended therapies for Stage D HF incorporating fluoroscopic analysis for diagnosis and device placement.
- Discuss the definition, causes, and evaluation of syncope, including fluoroscopic analysis.
- Discuss ways to assess CV risk beyond scoring.
- Describe the numerous CV risk factors associated with insulin resistance including the dyslipidemia.
- Explain how to recognize insulin resistance and it’s detrimental CV influence prior to diabetes.
- Explain the rationale for combinations lipid therapy.
- Discuss how to address the prevention of CV disease from a multi-factorial perspective.
- Discuss the differences in currently available statins in their ability to reduce LDL cholesterol.
- Identify the currently recommended goal LDL cholesterol for patients based on cardiovascular risk, incorporating angiographic evidence of risk.
- Review the medical literature that either supports or refutes current LDL cholesterol goals for patients of varying cardiovascular risk.
- Given a specific case study, assess a patient’s overall cardiovascular risk, their goal LDL cholesterol, and discuss an appropriate statin to treat the patient.
- Review the mechanism of action, adverse effects, dosing and warnings/precautions associated with clopidogrel.
- Compare and contrast the efficacy and adverse effects of low vs. high loading doses of clopidogrel.
- Compare and contrast the use of clopidogrel in patients receiving bare-metal and drug-eluting stents, including fluoroscopic evidence.
- Determine the most appropriate duration of clopidogrel use following a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
- Formulate a treatment strategy with clopidogrel for a newly diagnosed patient with acute coronary syndrome.

Covenant Heart Institute is proud to sponsor the
2006 West Texas Cardiac Symposium
“Tracking the Evidence”
The West Texas Cardiac Symposium was established in 1992. Cardiac Cath and Special Procedures Laboratory staff from the three major hospitals collaborated with vendors to produce an educational experience addressing specific staff needs and interests.
Methodist Hosptial and St. Mary Hospital later merged to become Covenant Health System, part of the St. Joseph Health System. Out of this merger, the Covenant Heart Institute was created. The West Texas Cardiac Symposium was revived in 2001, and has been an annual event since then, existing for several years as a joint venture between Covenant Heart Institute and University Medical Center.
While Cath Lab and Special Procedures Lab specific issues were the original focus, the symposium has broadened to meet the needs of all staff who work with cardiovascular disease. Besides local speakers, guest speakers have come from, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Washington D.C. Average attendance at the symposium is 200 and in 2006, pharmacists were added to the target audience. |
